Ruud van Nistelrooy is set to take charge at Manchester United on an interim basis.
After the sacking of Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford, Van Nistelrooy has been given the reins for the Red Devils.
Of course, as we’ve seen before with the likes of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, interim bosses can often become permanent managers under the right circumstances.
However, if Van Nistelrooy is to succeed at Old Trafford, he may need some help.
Speaking on the Seaman Says Podcast, Tim Sherwood has been discussing Manchester United’s options in terms of Van Nistelrooy’s backroom staff, and he says that Rene Meulensteen could be an option to come and help Van Nistelrooy.

Rene Meulensteen tipped for Manchester United return
Sherwood suggested that Meulensteen could come in and help Van Nistelrooy settle at Old Trafford.
Meulensteen was actually a part of Alex Ferguson’s coaching staff at Manchester United for a long time before pursuing a managerial career of his own.
Meulensteen briefly managed in the Premier League with Fulham, but he was ultimately sacked by the Cottagers after just three months in charge.
“Do you think he will bring anyone in to help him, Ruud?” Sherwood was asked.
“I think so, possibly, Rene Meulensteen would be out there, a Dutch guy who will know Ruud. It’s key to get a good group around him. I think he’s just taken it until the end of the season, so maybe not,” Sherwood said.
Meulensteen return seems unlikely
Bringing Meulensteen back to Old Trafford seems like a good idea on paper. After all, he’s a top coach who knows the club well.
Indeed, the Dutch coach has seen it all at Manchester United, he won the Champions League as a coach, while Meulensteen even had a training ground bust-up with Wayne Rooney.
However, this move at this moment in time does seem unlikely.
Ruben Amorim looks like he could take charge at Old Trafford shortly, while even if Van Nistelrooy was to stay, Jim Ratcliffe seemingly wants to distance United from the relics of their past.
Alex Ferguson himself has just been sacked as a club ambassador, so it’s hard to imagine that Ratcliffe will want to bring back one of Ferguson’s former coaches as the club finally looks to step out of Fergie’s shadow.
This is a smart idea in a lot of ways, but Meulensteen is unlikely to be back in the Old Trafford dugout anytime soon.
