Tim Sherwood has told Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast Show (Tuesday, 09:17am) that Tottenham Hotspur fans are getting ahead of themselves after being drawn against RedBull Leipzig in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Spurs qualified for the knockout round after two wins against Red Star Belgrade and four from six against Olympiacos. They were quite some way behind Bayern Munich, though, who won all six matches.

Spurs have avoided some of the round’s biggest clubs including Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain. Instead, they have been drawn against one of the most exciting – but up-and-coming sides – in European football.

Leipzig, who are managed by 32-year-old Julian Nagelsmann – are top of the Bundesliga. Many Spurs fans are confident after the draw, but ex-Tottenham gaffer believes fans are getting ahead of themselves with Leipzig a tough test.

“There are bigger names in there,” Sherwood said. “When you play Real Madrid or Bayern Munich. Tottenham fans are expecting to get past Leipzig and looking at the next round. They’ve got a top manager, they have Timo Werner.”

TBR’s view – Should Spurs expect to beat Leipzig?

Tottenham’s poor start to the season should not be forgotten – and neither should the fact that the Champions League knockout stages are an unforgiving test. Spurs are the favourites, but they cannot begin to consider the quarter finals.

Leipzig have found the back of the net 61 times in 23 league and cup appearances, with Werner scoring at a ratio of a goal every game. Yes, Spurs should win, but they will need to be at their best to win the tie.
