Tim Sherwood has claimed on BeIN Sports that Liverpool stole Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal in the summer of 2017, after the Reds midfielder scored two sublime efforts against Genk in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Oxlade-Chamberlain, 26, joined Liverpool just over two years ago from Arsenal for £35million (BBC Sport) and has since clocked up 54 appearances for the Reds. He managed just four outings in 2018-19, because of a serious knee injury.
But ‘The Ox’ has recovered from that problem and has clocked up 10 appearances this season – starting five of those with there being plenty of competition in the middle of the park at Anfield. On Wednesday, he scored two against Genk.
His first was an excellent low drive, but his second was a piece of genius that saw him flick a ball off the bar with the outside of his right boot. Sherwood believes Liverpool snapped up a bargain when they signed Oxlade-Chamberlain.

“The sporting director at Liverpool, Michael Edwards, does not waste much money,” Sherwood said. “When he spends it, it is the correct decision. He stole Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal.
“Give him a run of games, it hasn’t materialised yet because of injuries, but Jurgen Klopp will get the best out of that kid. For sure, he will be a big, big player for Liverpool and England.”
TBR’s view – £35million is a bargain for Oxlade-Chamberlain
Despite his injury, signing Oxlade-Chamberlain for less than £40million is an absolute steal – as Sherwood says. The player has enormous quality and is capable of producing magical moments, so much so that he should be in the England side.
Oxlade-Chamberlain now has the chance to build on an impressive start to life at Liverpool and finally turn his glimpses of quality into consistency – especially ahead of Euro 2020. But the fee Liverpool paid for The Ox, is on the cheap side.
