Tim Sherwood says Dele Alli should leave Tottenham, and follow Liverpool star’s example

Tim Sherwood has told Optus Sport’s The Kelly And Wrighty Show (October 15) that Dele Alli should look to follow in Liverpool star Mo Salah and Manchester City ace Kevin De Bruyne’s footsteps – by leaving Tottenham and proving Jose Mourinho wrong.

Alli, 24, has been removed from the starting line-up at Tottenham by Mourinho. Indeed, he has only been involved in the matchday squad four times in the club’s eight league and cup appearances – and was linked with a loan move to PSG.

Mourinho is clearly trying to get more out of Alli and warning the player by removing him from the side. Sometimes it works, sometimes the player leaves and shines elsewhere – De Bruyne and Salah for example, after being ousted at Chelsea.

Asked about Alli’s situation, former Spurs boss Sherwood suggested that the England midfielder should leave Tottenham and look to follow in £200,000-a-week (Spotrac) Liverpool star Salah – and De Bruyne’s footsteps.

“If I’m Dele Alli, I’m rolling my sleeves up and telling Mourinho that if it is not going to be here, I’ll go somewhere else and prove you wrong, again, like he has been proved wrong before. He’s got it wrong before, De Bruyne, Salah,” Sherwood said on Alli.

TBR’s view – Alli has the quality, but needs a chance

There is no doubt that Alli has the quality and more than enough to have an impact under Mourinho at Spurs. But something needed to give. The England man has struggled since a hamstring injury.

He needed to be taken out of the firing line. Now he has, Alli has been given the rest from criticism on the pitch. Although his name remains in the headlines, he has been rested both physically and mentally. Now, he could return in better form.
