Tim Sherwood says £39m Spurs defender should play in midfield now

Tottenham Hotspur have a very unique tactical style.

It doesn’t take a genius to tell you that.

The north London club play in a way unlike almost any other club.

They play with the highest line we’ve perhaps ever seen, while their full-backs bomb forward and invert at the same time.

How Tottenham’s full-backs operate has been a major talking point this season, and now, speaking on Undr the Cosh, Tim Sherwood has been discussing how Pedro Porro plays, claiming that he doesn’t think the Spaniard is in the right position, claiming that he thinks he’s more of a midfielder.

Pedro Porro is a midfielder

Sherwood spoke about the £39m player and his positioning.

“Porro, I think going forwards, he’s a midfield player. He’s a wide player, great delivery, set-pieces are brilliant, but he was asked to play as a right-back and he was getting exploited,” Sherwood said.

Pedro Porro basically plays in midfield

Pedro Porro may be listed as a right-back on the Tottenham teamsheet, but make no mistake about it, he’s basically playing in a midfield role already.

He very rarely sits back and defends, and when he does go forward, he often drifts into the centre.

Porro is much more akin to a number 10 than he is a traditional right-back, and that just goes to show how unique Ange Postecoglou’s tactical style is.

It’s very interesting to watch Porro in this role, and Sherwood is spot on when he talks about his positioning here.

We may think of the Spaniard as a right-back, but much more similar to a James Maddison than he is a Gary Neville.

The role of the right-back has changed so much in recent years thanks to the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s attacking intent and Pep Guardiola’s new-style inversion, and Porro is an interesting blend of both modern phenomena.
