Tim Sherwood has responded when asked if Brighton manager Graham Potter could become Tottenham Hotspur’s next manager during his punditry on Optus Sport’s The Analysis Show – applauding the Seagulls manager’s work on the training ground.

Potter watched on as Brighton secured a crucial three points to take them four points above Newcastle United and more importantly, six away from the relegation zone with a game in hand just before the international break.

While many are of the opinion that Brighton have played some nice football, they have struggled to put the ball in the back of the net despite having Neal Maupay and Danny Welbeck as options up front. Potter, though, has earnt plenty of plaudits.

Sherwood, an ex-Tottenham manager himself, responded to a question sent in by a fan during the program. Asked if Potter could take Spurs into the top four, Sherwood replied by suggesting Brighton could still go down – but had plenty of positives for Potter.

“Not now,” Sherwood initially replied. “The way he coaches his side, and the work he puts in the training ground as we have evidently seen – but look at it, he could still get relegated and then that would be a disaster. Then he’s going nowhere.

“There’s a real belief, he’s a training-ground coach – with better players, who knows what he could achieve. Jose could still take Spurs into top four, there’s still an opportunity to qualify for the Champions League and win the Carabao Cup.”

TBR’s view – Is Sherwood good enough for Tottenham?

Well, Daniel Levy made the bold call not to go for a high-profile manager when he hired Mauricio Pochettino – and look how that turned out. While Potter is some way behind the Southampton side that Pochettino managed, he is on the right track.

Certainly, if Potter can improve Brighton and guide them into mid-table next season – and then further the season after that – then there is no reason why he cannot managed a top-six Premier League side in the future. But right now? No.
