Tim Sherwood hopes Christian Eriksen will sign a new Tottenham contract

Tim Sherwood is hopeful that Christian Eriksen will extend his contract at Tottenham if, just like in the transfer window just gone, Europe’s big hitters do not want to swoop next summer.

As per Sky Sports, Sherwood said that Eriksen is capable of playing for any club in Europe, but says he may extend his deal rather than leave on a free next summer if the calibre of suitor he wants doesn’t come forward again.

He said: “He’s a top, top player. He can play for the two giants in Spain, and he could play for any big club. Hopefully, for Tottenham’s sake, those big clubs are not going to be there for him at the end of the season.

“Then, I believe, it’s possible that he could sign a new contract at Tottenham and I really hope for Tottenham’s sake that he does. I remember when I was at Tottenham and Sol Campbell left, Daniel Levy vowed he would never, ever lose anyone on a free again.”

TBR’s View – Eriksen may be set for a bumper pay day

Aaron Ramsey is just one example of an elite player who let his contract run down in order to be more desirable to potential suitors and also earn himself an increased wage.

Eriksen would like to think a European big hitter would come in if he was on a free transfer and that would also allow the purchasing club to take the money they’re saving on a transfer fee and pay it to him.

Even if a genuine giant doesn’t come in, another club would likely be able to offer him a pay rise, which would give him an interesting decision to make.

Would he sign a new deal even if no giants came in? Perhaps, but being in a position where he is very desirable to buying clubs is not one he’d give up easily and Daniel Levy has a real fight on his hands to avoid losing him for nothing.
