Tim Sherwood explains what it will take for Jose Mourinho to be sacked by Tottenham

Tim Sherwood has told Optus Sport’s Matchday Extra that he believes Tottenham Hotspur will sack Jose Mourinho and look for a new manager if the Portuguese gaffer fails to qualify for Europe – and lose to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final.

Mourinho put a dismal week behind him – having suffered a North London derby defeat to Arsenal and then a Europa League exit to Dinamo Zagreb – by beating Aston Villa away from home on Sunday evening. Harry Kane and Carlos Vinicius scored.

It saw Spurs climb into sixth place and just three points off the top four, while Spurs are also in the final of the Carabao Cup. But Mourinho labelled the 3-0 extra-time loss to Zagreb as one of the matches that will permanently haunt him.

Ex-Spurs boss Sherwood has explained that should Tottenham fail to qualify for the Champions League, or the Europa League, and if they lose to Pep Guardiola’s City – then Spurs will be looking for a new manager in the summer.

“If Jose drops out of the top four and doesn’t qualify for the Europa League, and he doesn’t win the Carabao Cup, I think Tottenham will have a new manager,” Sherwood said on Sunday. “What else can they do?

“The objective is to finish in the Champions League – they did it all the time with Pochettino there. If they’re not in that, or the Europa League, there’s a problem. He’s still got time to finish in the top four and win the Carabao Cup – and then he’s a genius.”

TBR’s view – Who could replace Mourinho?

Football site 90Min have claimed that Spurs have compiled a shortlist of managers to replace Mourinho – as much as seven. They include Max Allegri, Steven Gerrard, Carlo Ancelotti, Julian Nagelsmann, Diego Simeone, Brendan Rodgers and Nuno Santo.

Everton will hardly let Ancelotti leave, Simeone will hardly want to leave Atletico, Gerrard will not want to leave for one of Liverpool’s rivals and Rodgers is doing well at Leicester. That leaves Allegri, Nagelsmann and Santo.

Of those three, he best suited would be Nagelsmann. Allegri is out of work but is similar to Mourinho and Santo has failed to help Wolves this season – with the absence of Raul Jimenez proving too big a hindrance.
