Tottenham Hotspur defender Davinson Sanchez has been described by Tim Sherwood as a “mistake waiting to happen”, in conversation with Optus Sport.

The 24-year-old has made eight appearances for Jose Mourinho’s Spurs this season, including four Premier League starts, but was not in the squad for last night’s trip to Burnley.

Sanchez scored an own goal against West Ham as Tottenham relinquished a three-goal lead to draw 3-3 on Sunday 18 October.

Though Mourinho kept faith with the Colombia international against LASK, the manager went for a centre-back pairing of Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier in the 1-0 win at Turf Moor.

“They’ve got so much talent in forward areas, he needs to find that solid base behind,” former Spurs midfielder Sherwood told Optus Sport.

“He seems to like Eric Dier out of those centre-backs, Alderweireld is the best partner for him, a calming influence. Davinson Sanchez is a mistake waiting to happen.

“What they have to do to challenge is keep Son fit and keep Kane fit, they haven’t done that for the last few seasons, they always miss one or two over the period.

“They’re so reliant on these two players. It is not about the team. It is about solid players behind the front three.”

Pretty bold comments from Sherwood about the £65,000-a-week man, who’s had a shaky start to the season.

It’s worth remembering just how good Sanchez was following the resumption of English football, and that mistakes do happen – and also that he’s just 24.

For all we know, he could’ve just been given a rest and, come the next matchday, he’ll feature again, do well and the criticism will be forgotten.
