Following Liverpool’s disappointing 1-1 draw with West Ham United on Monday, attention has turned to the Reds’ weak backline as they continue their push for the title.
Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood made an astute point when discussing Liverpool’s lack of defensive depth, accurately criticising the club’s decision to loan Nathaniel Clyne in January.
When speaking on The Debate, Sherwood described Clyne’s loan exit to Bournemouth as a “massive error.”
“To let Clyne go to Bournemouth is amazing for me,” Sherwood said. “You’ve got Milner who is going to play in there and do his best, is an outstanding professional and is capable – but to let Nathaniel Clyne go to Bournemouth is incredible to me.”

Sherwood is completely right in his evisceration of Liverpool’s transfer policy, as it was naive to allow an experienced Premier League defender to leave in January.
When a side is challenging for a league title, strength in numbers is a necessary attribute. Allowing Clyne to depart when the defence was already looking short-staffed remains a baffling move, as Milner will always struggle to expertly cover at the back.
As Nathaniel Clyne plies his trade at Bournemouth, the Reds’ defence has begun to falter in their run-in, revealing the foolishness of letting the right back leave Anfield.
