Tim Krul raved about newly-linked Newcastle target’s confidence this season

Newcastle United reportedly want to sign Norwich City star Todd Cantwell this summer as the club’s prospective new owners target British Premier League players – and Tim Krul has described the playmaker as “incredible” this season.

Cantwell, 22, has starred for Norwich this season despite the Canaries sitting bottom of the Premier League. In his 29 top-tier outings, Cantwell has netted six times and laid on another two assists.

Indeed, Cantwell has been linked with an England call-up while other, bigger clubs have been touted as potential new homes for the right-footed star. Naturally a number 10, Cantwell has been mainly used from the left side of midfield this term.

90Min has claimed that Cantwell is one of six players eyed by Newcastle this summer, who are from England or Scotland currently in the Premier League. John Stones, Chris Smalling, John McGinn, Joe Lewis and Max Aarons are also linked.

Toon icon Krul, Cantwell’s Norwich teammate, once heaped praise on the Canaries midfielder after Norwich beat Tottenham on penalties in the FA Cup – with Cantwell scoring. Krul described Cantwell’s confidence as “unbelievable”, as per the Mail.

TBR’s view – Would Cantwell improve Newcastle?

Newcastle need goals and creativity. Allan Saint-Maximin is clearly one of the leading contenders to retain his place post takeover, but Cantwell is hardly a left-sided attacker despite playing there this season.

The English playmaker is best in front of the midfield and behind a striker, and that could be just what Newcastle need to add more goals. Giving the striker, whether that is Joelinton or a new signing, more ammunition is key.

Cantwell would be a crucial addition to Newcastle going from mid-table obscurity to European contention. They will not be alone in their pursuit of Cantwell, with the Liverpool Echo claiming Jurgen Klopp’s side are keen on the £30million-rated ace.
