Back in 2017, plenty of Championship clubs were being heavily linked with a move for a talented young PSG midfielder. As reported by Get West London, Sunderland were one of those teams.
The Black Cats had just been relegated to the Championship and they were reportedly hoping to bring in Christopher Nkunku on loan from the French giants.
No deal ever came off and Nkunku remained at PSG, where he was expected to be a bit-part player.

But Sunderland will be wondering what might have been had Nkunku joined the club.
Nkunku went on to play 27 games for PSG that season and become a regular member of the first-team. Last summer, he decided he wanted guaranteed first-team football, so moved to RB Leipzig in Germany.
The results have been devastating, for opposing Bundesliga defences.
Nkunku has become an assist machine, providing 15 in 33 games for Leipzig, including four in one game against Schalke. Leipzig are also flying, including a dream run in the Champions League. Only Angel Di Maria, Thomas Muller, Jadon Sancho, and Kevin De Bruyne have provided more assists in Europe’s top five leagues this season.
Sunderland, in the same time, have dropped to League One in acrimonious circumstances.
Would Nkunku have saved Sunderland from Championship relegation? It doesn’t look like Lionel Messi could have done that. But at least Sunderland fans would have had more fun watching Nkunku along the way.
