Having looked like he was going to join Chelsea after Antonio Conte told the Blues to spend £100 million to secure his signature, as reported by the Telegraph, former Everton striker Romelu Lukaku officially became a Manchester United player on Monday.
The Belgian arrived at Old Trafford for a fee of £75 million, according to BBC Sport, and immediately joined his new teammates in a training session ahead of United’s pre-season tour of the United States.
With such a big move happening there are number of personnel, both at Old Trafford and Goodison Park, who will benefit from the Belgian international’s arrival. At the same time, there are those individuals who will suffer as a result of his big money move to Old Trafford.
Here The Boot Room look at the potential winners and losers as Lukaku joined the Red Devils…
The winners
Jose Mourinho
Having once sold the Belgian, Mourinho somehow manages to come out of this as somewhat of a winner. The Portuguese boss, of course, sold Lukaku while he was at Chelsea without a buy-back clause in the contract. Without this clause, he has been able to snatch his new man from the grasp of his former club and now has a world-class goal scorer in his side ahead of next season.
The former Anderlecht striker scored more than any of United’s men last season, yet he is far from the finished article. Mourinho not only has someone who is almost guaranteed to find the back of the net, but he also has a player that will develop and improve over the next few years with United.
Ed Woodward
Manchester United’s vice-chairman was having a bit of a rough summer before this deal, having only brought in Benfica’s Victor Lindelof. Meanwhile, his decision to attend the English and Irish Lions rugby match reportedly frustrated a few faces within United’s ranks, according to Yahoo Sport. Nonetheless, Woodward has come up trumps after snatching a top-class player from a key rival.
Everton
Although they may have lost their star man, Everton are winners overall. The Toffees have spent a large amount of money this summer already, yet, it’s almost as though they knew they woukd make it back.
With £75 million coming in, and Wayne Rooney joining on a free, Ronald Koeman’s side have not only gained finance they’ve also added high-level playing experience. Rooney, while not having the greatest of seasons under Mourinho, will help motivate the Toffees ahead of the upcoming campaign.

The losers
Anthony Martial
It gets bleaker for the Frenchman who only started 18 Premier League games last season. Martial doesn’t look likely to lead the line for the Red Devils anytime soon and it may be this season that he defines himself as a winger, or otherwise he may find himself on the bench.
As Lukaku joined, Martial was linked with a move away from United, with a move to Roma a possibility for the next campaign, according to the Mirror.
Jose Mourinho
In somewhat of a weird way, Mourinho is also a loser. The Portuguese manager deemed Lukaku as ‘not good enough’ during his time at Chelsea and now he has to manage this young man.
A few years have passed since this ordeal, though, and there seem to be no hard feelings. While Mourinho slightly contradicts himself by completing this deal, it should turn out positively in his favour.
Wayne Rooney
Even if the Englishman was to join Champions League winners Real Madrid, he would still be criticised, but Rooney has come out worse from this transfer.
His departure gave way for Lukaku to join United and this included the 31-year-old giving up the opportunity to grace the Champions League again.
Rooney takes a drop in quality to gain more game time, but it is a near certainty that the Englishman won’t play at the same standard of football, or with the same quality of players, again in his career.
