4-1-2-1-2
Any formation that involves playing two strikers up front had become somewhat old-fashioned over the last few years, with dominance in the midfield and neat build-up play seen as more important in securing results than a more attacking approach where both of the opposition’s centre-halves are occupied.
Nevertheless, Leicester City demonstrated to the rest of the Premier League how a pair of forwards can function in an effective team at the highest level, and they are far from the only side in Europe doing it now either. At times, even on the biggest of stages, Atlético Madrid under Simeone have opted for two up front, and with Sadio Mane in their side, this is certainly an option for Liverpool next term.
With the pace to run beyond defenders, Mane would be a genuine and constant threat to any back four in the Premier League. Holding a high line would be a dangerous game to play, as the Senegalese speedster could be off at any moment, sprinting into the channel or chasing down a long pass from Henderson or Coutinho.
Working in tandem with Sturridge, they have almost everything that a team could wish for in a pair of strikers. Mane will work hard in defence while also stretching the opposition, while Sturridge possesses a subtle degree of guile and top-drawer finishing ability that can turn any game on its head. This partnership could flourish into one of the most potent in 2016/17.
