A lack of a goal threat
In the Premier League, Southampton average just over a goal a game – they have scored on twelve occasions in eleven matches so far this season.
Simply put, that is not good enough. This return of goals is their lowest since their return to the top flight of English football five years ago over eleven games, as even in 2012/13 Nigel Adkins’ then side had scored fifteen times, although they did only accrue five points.
Charlie Austin has five league goals to his name, whilst other striker Shane Long is yet to get off of the mark (however in his defence he has endured injury setbacks).
Summer signing Nathan Redmond is next behind Austin with three, ahead of all other Southampton players who have either not netted, or have just once.
Austin and Long need to start hitting the back of the net on a regular basis, but also goals need to come from the rest of the side – particularly midfield (Tadic and Ward-Prowse are the only recognised midfielders with league goals so far).
