Ryan Giggs left the coaching staff during the summer after the appointment of Jose Mourinho. It was believed that the Welshman was disappointed that he wasn’t given the job himself, but based on his very limited experience, it wasn’t a surprise that he wasn’t considered. Despite the doubts about his coaching ability, the club legend was extremely important to the club last season as his presence on the staff meant that there was still a connection to the Sir Alex Ferguson era. This was important to the supporters as they could still recognise their club and connect to it in the same way they have done for their entire life. That is now gone and there really is a new era at Manchester United.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing as the club may need to move away from the Ferguson era in order to achieve further success. Neither David Moyes nor Louis van Gaal could do well as the shadow of Ferguson loomed large and a completely fresh start could be best for the club. However, the supporters enjoyed having a link with the old regime and thought that Giggs’ presence would mean that the Manchester United way would never be forgotten. If Mourinho fails to achieve immediate success, the complaints on the terraces will grow louder and fan protests could be on the agenda.
