There are too many egos at the club
It is easy to see why Manchester United opted to sign Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic this summer. They are both world class players who would improve nearly any side in the world. However, Manchester United’s transfer policy since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson has often led to them signing players with huge egos. They have opted for reputation rather than suitability for the squad and it is now becoming a problem on the pitch. There is a clear lack of team spirit, which is one of the elements of football that is often overlooked. Manchester United don’t look capable of digging in when things aren’t going their way and this will severely damage their push for the top four.
The problem has been compounded by Wayne Rooney’s role at the club. He is still the captain, but he is becoming less and less important to what is happening on the pitch. This has opened a power vacuum on the pitch and the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba will want to be the ones to fill it. The former has already taken over penalty taking duties which shows how he is already a powerful figure in the dressing room. It will be a tough job for Mourinho to manage all of these egos, especially as he has a big one himself and if things don’t improve soon, this could become a huge problem.
