They haven’t managed to establish a style
Manchester United have historically been known for their quick, high intensity style of play which relied heavily on playing down the wings. This was the Sir Alex Ferguson way and they could be pulsating to watch at times. It was the most successful period of the club’s history and the main reason for that was that the team was larger than any one individual. They are currently suffering from an identity crisis and have been since the retirement of Ferguson.
The first task for Mourinho was to establish a style and it had to be one that would lead to success. He managed to do it at Chelsea for a limited period and Manchester United will hope that he can do similar at Old Trafford, before they appoint a more long term option. Louis van Gaal managed to implement a style which brought a small amount of success, but it was boring and the Manchester United fans soon grew unsatisfied with his work. The success that he achieved wasn’t enough to justify his style of play. So far this season, Mourinho has stuck to his trusted 4-2-3-1 formation, but it isn’t working. It limits his best players and he may need to change from what he knows to be a success at Manchester United.
