4-1-2-1-2
As a variant of the more classical 4-4-2, the 4-1-2-1-2 or ‘diamond’ formation can be exceptionally powerful in the right circumstances. Of course, as with every set-up, there are strengths and limitations, with the obvious weakness lying in a distinct lack of width. As such, the midfielders chosen; of which Paul Pogba would surely be one, would need to boast tremendous energy and running ability.
With United being narrow in midfield almost by definition, Pogba would need to be aware of his responsibilities towards either flank, aiding a full-back in defensive situations, while also occasionally popping up here to capitalise on any potential space left by the opposition. To assist in this, the pacey Antonio Valencia would most probably be the preferred choice of the existing right-back options at the club, purely for his penchant to overlap in attack.
Ahead of the narrow trio of conventional central midfielders, Henrikh Mkhitaryan would most likely take up the role in behind a pair of strikers, although Pogba himself is more than capable of applying his vast array of talents in an area slightly further forward. With eight goals and 12 assists to his name for Juventus last term, he is clearly no stranger to producing quality in the final third.
Even if the Frenchman will be coming from deeper areas, the attacking duo of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Anthony Martial; or perhaps Wayne Rooney, will relish being on the end of Pogba’s passes, knowing that he will be able to pick them out in an instant.
