Return of the diamond
Klopp has firmly stuck to his 4-2-3-1 system throughout the vast majority of his managerial career, but sometimes a different approach is needed, and this is where the diamond system could come in.
Exploited to devastating effect by Brendan Rodgers during the 2013/14 campaign, a diamond would allow Liverpool to be compact against sides who try and attack through the middle, whilst adding the threat of two forwards, which could be devastating on the counter attack.
It would also be an efficient way to play Wijnaldum in the centre without worrying about his defensive struggles, sitting alongside Henderson and Can, whilst giving support for Coutinho, Sturridge and Origi.
Although both forwards operate excellently on their own, Sturridge and Origi have occasionally played together, and were a brutal partnership in the 6-1 win over Southampton in December. Wijnaldum’s addition to the side could allow this to become a reality again.
