Anthony Martial Has Become An Enigma

Martial was one of United’s leading lights last season during a dour campaign under Louis Van Gaal. The young Frenchman scored 11 Premier League goals but is yet to get off the mark this term. Martial was injured in a clash of heads with Daryl Janmaat in the first half, an incident that may have left him disoriented while he was dispossessed in the build up to Watford’s opener.

In fairness to him and United, it was possibly a foul. The incident had an uncanny resemblance to Leroy Fer’s ‘foul’ on Gary Cahill last week.

Due to the arrival of Ibrahimovic and the emergence of Marcus Rashford, it is hard to envisage Martial getting a look in through the middle. He swapped wings with Rashford a great deal while he was on the pitch, but struggled to make an impression on the game. Too often recently, his touch has been loose and his decision making poor. His speed should be the ideal foil for Ibrahimovic, but the two seem to have little understanding.

With Henrik Mkhitaryan, Juan Mata, Ashley Young and Memphis Depay all competing for a start on the flanks, Martial has to step is game up to justify staying in the team. He has all the tools, but seems to have reached a plateau in his development, which can have happen with young players.
