Watford are struggling with a lack of strength in depth
From the announcement of Watford’s starting eleven shortly before kick-off on Sunday, it was evident that the Hornets could be in for a long afternoon.
With eight first-team players ruled out through injury, Mazzarri mirrored Tottenham’s strategy of three at the back, bringing in Craig Cathcart, but they couldn’t deal with wave after wave of white attacks and, at times, defended woefully.
Tottenham’s third goal of the first half was a gift from Kaboul, who failed to clear when under little pressure, and it was the third time this season that Watford have conceded three times in the opening 45 minutes.
It’s clear that there are huge gaps in the Watford back-line, and with the transfer window now open it would be wise for Mazzarri to invest in defenders before the Hornets have to start looking anxiously over their shoulder at the drop.
