Three things we learnt from Tottenham’s 4-0 thrashing of Stoke City

Spurs finally sparkle

Mauricio Pochettino’s young Tottenham side had started the season rather solidly, without recapturing the spark, swagger and craft of the team that for so long last campaign pursued Leicester in the Premier League title race before dropping off to finish third. Their display at Stoke was the first sign of that brilliance returning, where they were ruthless on the counter and dispatched the home side mercilessly to earn their second consecutive 4-0 win over the Potters.

Spurs had only won one in seven Premier League matches since their 4-0 triumph at Stoke in April of last season, but stopped the rot in scintillating fashion, with Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen posing constant threats, and Son Heung-Min’s clinical finishing going some way to justifying his hefty price tag after transferring from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2015.

It was Danish midfielder Eriksen who was one of the main showstoppers however, laying on the assists for both of Son’s finishes and enjoying 45 touches of the ball in the Stoke half, more than any other player.

The signs are that things are beginning to come together again for Pochettino’s Spurs, and at just the right time with their Champions League return against Monaco at Wembley coming up in midweek, their first season amongst Europe’s elite since 2010/11.
