Playing at Wembley cannot become an issue
Of course, Spurs are only competing in the Europa League because they were knocked out of the Champions League earlier this season after a lacklustre campaign. CSKA Moscow were the only team that Spurs managed to beat in six matches, with two defeats to Monaco and another to Bayer Leverkusen ensuring they failed to finish in the top two. Playing in the unfamiliar surroundings of Wembley was used in some quarters as a reason for their struggles. If Tottenham are to qualify for the last 16, then they will need to overcome this. Nothing but a victory in the return leg will do. There is a theory that opposing players are inspired by English football’s grandest stadium and raise their game accordingly. This is something Spurs must be aware of but they cannot afford to let the past affect them. The supporters can obviously play their part, but it will be down to the players themselves to prove that Wembley is not an issue. After all, they will be playing all matches there next season.
