The pressure is overwhelming Paul Pogba

The Twitter fandom, emojis, haircuts, Adidas advertisements, price tag, and the expectations of punditry and fans alike are weighing heavy on Paul Pogba’s shoulders. Despite only being 23, Pogba is failing to deliver on the pitch with skill and leadership. Jose Mourinho touted Pogba as a future Manchester United captain in the run-up to the weekend’s football but was left looking a little foolish with his premature praise.

Paul Pogba was abysmal against Liverpool on Sunday. The Frenchman seemed cursed as Liverpool players hounded him down by the couplets and his passes went astray. As the match wore on, he grew increasingly frustrated and wasteful, launching blind long balls into the box. He completed a disappointing 71% of his passes and gave the ball away on countless occasions, trying to be too clever and losing out to Liverpool’s industrious midfielders.

The big occasion and expectations being placed on Paul Pogba have been detrimental time and time again. During Euro 2016, Pogba was expected to drag France to the final however he disappointed on many occasions. Despite making it to the final, he was ineffective against Portugal, much like today.

The derbies aren’t Pogba’s forte, yet. He has put in decent performances against smaller opposition but he will not be able to touch his world record price tag until he impacts high pressure matches like the one this weekend.
