Southampton finally sort out defensive issues
Since an impressive start to the season under the leadership of Jose Fonte and Virgil van Dijk, Southampton’s defence has struggled in recent times.
Claude Puel’s side had conceded 16 goals in the eight matches prior to the trip to the Stadium of Light – more than they had conceded in the 16 matches prior to that – so a clean sheet will be the most pleasing part of Saturday for the Saints manager.
With Fonte moving to Premier League rivals West Ham and Van Dijk out injured, Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens stepped up and maintained their defensive discipline well against Sunderland.
In particular 23-year-old Stephens, who impressed in the EFL Cup win over Liverpool at Anfield, starred once more with a sparkling performance; he made seven interceptions and eight clearances during the 4-0 win, making 63% of his tackles as he kept Sunderland at bay.
