Jay Rodriguez is slowly getting back to his best

Before the 2014 World Cup, Jay Rodriguez was part of the England squad and being linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur. However, disaster struck as he ruptured his cruciate ligament, which saw him miss over twelve months of football. He then suffered an ankle injury shortly after returning and missed a further six months. It has been a difficult couple of years for the 27-year-old, but he has continued to work hard behind the scenes and he is now receiving the rewards as Southampton’s starting striker.

He was afforded the opportunity after an injury to Charlie Austin, but he has made the most of it and is now putting forward his case to be the first choice striker at the club. Rodriguez was excellent on Sunday with his movement causing a lot of problems for the Leicester back four. He didn’t stop making runs and this created space for the other attacking players in the side. His hard work was rewarded with a goal, as he fired in from a tight angle to increase Southampton’s lead in the first half. It was an excellent performance from the striker and he is another that now needs to build on this over the coming months.
