Claude Puel lined up his side in a new-look diamond formation, which was perhaps detrimental to Southampton’s attacking abilities.

Similarly, his team selection raised a few eyebrows as some fringe players got the nod ahead of established first teamers and glamorous summer signings.

Charlie Austin, Jose Fonte and new boy Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg missed out with Maya Yoshida a (somewhat) surprise inclusion.

To his credit Puel did bring on Austin and Hojbjerg when Saints were chasing the game, but it was a case of too little too late.

On a side note, the sooner Ryan Bertrand returns to full fitness the better, as far as Southampton are concerned.
