Veteran Jermain Defoe the main outlet for the Black Cats

Even at the age of 33, Jermain Defoe is still a potent goal threat in the Premier League and he again proved his importance to his team in Saturday’s trip to St. Mary’s. He won the penalty from José Fonte which he duly stepped up to dispatch, putting Sunderland ahead ten minutes from time.

His finish from the spot meant that the England international has now netted ten goals in his last ten away games in the Premier League. He is capable of hitting goals wherever he plays, but his ratio on the road will very encouraging going forward for David Moyes’ Black Cats in their battle to avoid being sucked into the relegation dogfight, and an international call-up from former boss Sam Allardyce may well be in the pipeline.

His late penalty however wasn’t enough to secure Sunderland their first win of the season, and Sunderland now hold the unwanted record of being winless in their opening three Premier League fixtures for the past six consecutive seasons.
