Ciaran Clark is emerging as a fans favourite at St James’ Park

The Republic of Ireland international arrived with a tarnished reputation after being involved in Aston Villa’s horrendous Premier League campaign and it would be fair to say that his signing was met with an underwhelming response within the Newcastle fan-base. However, he has been the most consistent centre back and now one of the first names on the team-sheet for Benitez.

He impressed once again on Saturday with an assured defensive display. Clark dealt with the threat of Scott Hogan for the majority of the game and showed his leadership skills after the substitution of Jamaal Lascelles. The former Aston Villa player helped organise the defence and he showed his threat in the attacking half with the opening goal. Newcastle fans have been impressed by Clark and the move away from Aston Villa has come at the perfect time for the defender. He has already benefited from working under Benitez and he will continue to develop in the coming months.
