Three things we learnt from Newcastle’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa

Aston Villa just need time

Sloppy corner defending aside, Aston Villa could well have come away from the league leaders with a point, and it would not have been undeserved.

Unfortunately for Steve Bruce, you can’t often defend like that and get away with it. After last week’s defeat to Barnsley, Bruce said: “This is the best and biggest club I’ve had in 20 years in management and arguably the toughest one to turn around. Given time I know for a fact I’ll do it.”

Monday’s performance should only increase that belief. Correcting defensive lapses takes time on the training ground, particularly at a club which is still in transition and will continue to have players coming in and out during Summer.

Restricting the division’s best side to so few chances is a feat in itself. Once Bruce has fully implemented his own philosophies, Villa can become a force in the Championship. Players such as Jonathan Kodjia who positively stood out in this defeat should help see Villa safe this season; before aiming for much better things next term.
