Karl Darlow deserves to be Newcastle’s number one

There is a lot of competition to be Newcastle’s number one this season with three senior goalkeepers at the club. Karl Darlow is the current incumbent of the jersey and he showed why with a display of the highest quality to maintain his clean sheet. During the match, he made an impressive four saves, including an excellent stop to deny Eunan O’Kane in the second half. Moreover, he controlled his area well with some good claims from high balls, showing that he can deal with the physicality of the Championship, something that Matz Sels struggled with.

Darlow has been talked about as a future England international and although the competition is fierce, he is progressing well at Newcastle. It has taken him some time to become the club’s number one, but he can now push on and become a vital part of the future that is being shaped by Benitez. Matz Sels and Rob Elliot will be providing him with competition, but Darlow has the jersey at the moment and today’s performance will only cement his position.
