Leeds are reborn under Garry Monk
It wasn’t the result that Leeds were looking for as they dropped out of the play-off places this weekend, but they went toe-to-toe with the best side in this division and will be fairly happy with their performance. Although they didn’t take the chances that came their way, they put Newcastle under a lot of pressure and would have taken something from the game on another day. Monk has built a good team spirit in the Leeds squad and that was evident on the pitch as the players didn’t give up, despite the scoreline.
The supporters have recognised the effect that Monk has had since taking over at Elland Road. This was the club’s first sell-out in six years and highlights how the fan-base is getting behind what Monk is doing. It has been a difficult period for Leeds since dropping out of the Premier League over a decade ago, but there are green shoots of recovery at the club and their performance today suggests a play-off spot is well within their grasp. It is important that Massimo Cellino remains patient with Monk, especially if the side suffer from a loss of form as he is capable of taking Leeds back to the Premier League.
