Middlesbrough will need to rely on Stewart Downing
Aitor Karanka’s side are starting to feel the pressure of the Premier League after several defeats in a row. One positive however, is the constant ability of Downing to offer plenty of service from set-pieces. The Englishman created three chances yesterday, and put in five crosses. It was one of these crosses that allowed for Gibson to get his first goal at the Riverside since 2013.
With a high 86% pass rate as well, the experience and ability of Downing to get the ball into good positions nearly caught Spurs out and will be crucial in getting more opportunities against other sides.
Janssen looks like an impressive target man
With Harry Kane injured, naturally attention turned to the new striker brought in for this exact situation. While the new forward didn’t look immediately like a Kane style goal-scorer, he did look like a target man, something that Spurs didn’t have.
With his back to play, he provided the pass into Son which brought the South Korean his first goal, and was a big part in the second goal as well.
An assist and two shots on target is a start, and the striker will want to build on that as his Spurs career picks up momentum.
