3. It could be a tough season for Bournemouth
Eddie Howe’s men gave it a good go against United, but lacked the cutting edge that they displayed on occasions last season. The Bournemouth boss has gone for youth over experience this season and whilst new recruits Jordon Ibe and Lewis Cook both showed signs that they will be useful additions for the Cherries, neither really threatened an obdurate United defence.
Adam Smith’s consolation goal was a plus point, and Max Gradel looked a real handful when he came off the bench in the second half, but Bournemouth failed to fashion many clear-cut opportunities. For all the attractive football they played last season, the Cherries were not short of steel either, but the loss of club captain Tommy Elphick to Aston Villa feels like it could be a important one. Of course, it would be great to see the Cherries stay up playing the way that they do and ultimately their season will not rest on results against the likes of Manchester United, but Howe may need to add a bit more physicality to his side’s game if they are to steer clear of the relegation zone again this season.
