The Potters Are Benefitting From A Change In Shape
Hughes has switched to a 5-3-2 in recent weeks and the change in formation has produced two consecutive 1-1 draws. Stoke were conceding far too many goals in the season’s opening weeks, and Hughes is looking to find greater balance in his team. Much has been said about Hughes evolving Stoke’s style through the likes of Bojan, Marko Arnautovic and Xherdan Shaqiri, with some pundits suggesting they had lost the defensive solidity for which they were famed under Tony Pulis.
Playing in the middle of a back three suits Ryan Shawcross, who like most English defenders enjoys the safety of having numbers around him. The system also allows Hughes to employ some of his flair players high up the pitch with adequate defensive numbers behind them.
