Three things we learnt from Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool

Manchester United and Liverpool played out an entertaining match on Sunday, but they couldn’t be separated, making this the first Premier League season that the two fixtures between the clubs ended in draws. The home side had the better of the play, but their final ball was lacking and Liverpool threatened on the break. Considering United equalised late on, Liverpool will also feel slightly unfortunate to only take a point from the match. Although both sides would have wanted more, a draw isn’t the end of the world for either. Here are three things that we learnt…

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the undoubted star at Old Trafford

Paul Pogba may have his own emoji and hashtag on Twitter, but the star on the pitch is Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He has come to the Premier League at the age of 35 and he continues to deliver the goods on a weekly basis. On Sunday, he was relatively quiet, but he never turns off and his winning mentality allows him to be ready when a chance comes. When the ball was delivered by Antonio Valencia, the end result was never in doubt as he powered a header past Simon Mignolet. The big players step up during the big occasions and Ibrahimovic certainly did that on Sunday.

Overall, his link-up play was good and he was always picking the right passes to move his side forward. The rest of the team look to the Swedish striker during tricky periods and he is enjoying his role at Old Trafford. He now has 14 goals and three assists in the Premier League and he is emerging as a leading contender to finish as the league’s top scorer, especially considering the uncertainty surrounding Diego Costa. Manchester United have a great chance of a return to the Champions League, but they will need Ibrahimovic to fire them there.
