Ander Herrera Has Been Hard Done By At Old Trafford

Given the impact Herrera has made since coming into the team against Leicester last month, it is strange that he hasn’t been more integral in his first two seasons at United. He was part of Marcelo Bielsa’s Athletic Bilbao side that knocked United out of Europe in 2012, so those at the club should have had no doubt about his talents. The Red Devils haven’t exactly been blessed with central midfield talent either, but despite some good performances the Spaniard has never quite had a spot of his in midfield.

Herrera was given the man of the match award by Sky Sports, and won more tackles and interceptions than any other player on the pitch. He was tigerish in the duels and 50:50s, a legacy of his early days in the Basque country under Bielsa who is renowned for having his team’s press aggressively. He is also a cool head on the ball, and a majority of his passes were played inside Liverpool’s half. Herrera could have taken a few more risks on the ball, but was clearly under instruction to the take the safer option and control the game. He has also shown a keen eye for a goal in the past, but played in a very disciplined role last night.
