Iheanacho is the perfect back-up to Aguero
Another game, another goal for Kelechi Iheanacho as he continues his enviable record of scoring a goal on average every 83 minutes in the Premier League and Champions League.
The 19-year-old scored the winning goal in the Manchester derby on Saturday and found the net again last night, scoring City’s fourth goal after replacing Aguero in the 83rd minute. Iheanacho found the net 14 times last season and will be hoping to better that tally this season as his side attempt to compete on all four fronts.
Whilst Aguero has been the undisputed star striker for City over the past five years, finding adequate cover for him has not proved easy. Edin Dzeko and Mario Balotelli both carried out the role with some success, but both had their flaws and eventually moved on as they sought after more regular football. They were replaced with Wilfried Bony, whose move to the Etihad was a disaster for both parties.
However, in Iheanacho, City appear to have stumbled across a forward who is not only capable of leading the line when Aguero is unavailable, but also one who is at a stage in his career where he is happy to make intermittent appearances whilst perfecting his game.
From what we have seen so far, the Nigerian international appears to possess the finishing ability required to become the number one man at a top European club himself one day, but for now he is content to take his chances when they arrive at City. He is sure to get plenty of game time this season, as Aguero’s style of play means that the former Atletico Madrid man will undoubtedly require resting for certain fixtures. This is where Iheanacho will come in and, if he keeps scoring goals, there is no doubting that he will continue his inexorable rise to the top.
