Ilkay Gundogan made an impressive start to his City career
Another positive for City supporters was the performance of new signing Ilkay Gundogan. The 25-year-old was awarded his debut last night and looked the part as he slotted seamlessly into the side. Operating alongside De Bruyne in central attacking midfield, the German international’s composure and attacking intent left City supporters excited to see more of him over the course of the season.
Despite not having played a game since April, due to a knee injury picked up whilst at Borussia Dortmund, Gundogan looked a class act as he dictated play in the middle of the park. Injuries, however, have been a regular occurrence for the player in recent years. Back in 2013, a back injury sidelined Gundogan for 12 months at a crucial time in his career, putting his promising career on hold for a while.
From his performance last night, it is clear that he is a player of a immense ability who, if he can remain fit, is sure to be a crucial cog in the new-look City system. With David Silva turning 31 in January, Gundogan may well be the heir to the Spaniard’s throne in central attacking midfield for years to come.
