Sunderland’s bus parking nearly worked
This was never going to be an easy afternoon for the Black Cats, and David Moyes jokes about parking a double decker bus in the Anfield goal were not far off the mark. Liverpool enjoyed 78% possession and had a remarkable 27 shots, but until the final 15 minutes it looked like Sunderland may have emerged with a point.
From early on it was clear that the club from the north-east was playing for a point as they sat deep and refused to press even when Liverpool passed the ball around at the back, but they did well to retain their shape for much of the tie in two defensive banks on the edge of the box.
There were positives to take from this for Sunderland and David Moyes, and there is certainly no shame in conceding two to this Liverpool team, but with no Coutinho for much of the game and having come so close to a point, it will be frustrating for many Sunderland fans.
