Roberto Firmino showed why Daniel Sturridge can’t get a place in the team
After scoring a brace in midweek, many suspected that Daniel Sturridge could mount a challenge to start in the central role of Liverpool’s front line up at Selhurst Park on Saturday evening. However, Klopp stuck with his first choice attack and returned to the selection of Phillipe Coutinho, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.
They showed exactly why Klopp made that call too, with Mane unfortunate not to score, Coutinho producing some fine saves from Steve Mandanda and hitting the crossbar, and Firmino sealing the victory with a composed and exquisite dink over the oncoming goalkeeper into an empty net.
Sturridge has his work cut out if he is to displace any of these players, with all three in superb form. Firmino would be the most vulnerable as the central striker, but the Brazilian pressed hard and was prepared to drop deep to help out his midfield counterparts, something that the England international has struggled with.
