3) Arsene needs to spend – starting with a centre back

Rob Holding and Calum Chambers is not a central defensive pairing to challenge for the Premier League title. Whilst the pair did alright, Holding making a steady debut having been playing in a relegated Championship side last season, upgrades are needed as they clearly struggled to contain world class players like Philippe Coutinho.

With Gabriel Paulista and Per Mertesacker both out injured and Laurent Koscielny not yet match fit following a prolonged post-Euro 2016 break, it is suprising that the club did not force through a reported £30 million move for Shkodran Mustafi sooner. That move must now become a top priority for the Gunners as a Mertesacker replacement is vital if they are to maintain any hopes of a top four finish by Christmas. Arsene Wenger could do with taking a look at Liverpool, who recently signed Ragnar Klavan for £4 million as cover for injuries to Joe Gomez and Mamadou Sakho, with Klavan one of Sunday’s best performers.
