Three things we learnt from Liverpool’s demolition of Hull City

Liverpool really are contenders

Forgetting the blip against Burnley in the second game of the season, only Manchester City can rival the Reds in terms of how convincing their performances have been this season. Having taken victories at Arsenal and Chelsea, drawing with Tottenham, and brushing the title holders aside at Anfield, Jurgen Klopp’s side have been in superb form, with an average of three goals scored per game to date.

The Merseyside outfit have shown that they have the ability to beat the top sides already, and now against Hull have also shown that they are capable of breaking down a side who are happy to sit deep and defend for much of the game. A quick look at the fixture list shows that Manchester United are the only side who should provide a serious challenge to the Reds until they face Everton in a December Merseyside derby, by which time, Klopp will be hoping that his side have built up enough momentum to put them into consideration for a real challenge given their attacking potency.

With the Reds finally showing some form of defensive solidity, there are reasons for Liverpool fans to begin to think that they could just provide a real challenge for Champions League football at the very least this season. Whilst they are yet to keep a Premier League clean sheet, that will be the only concern to date for Jurgen Klopp. James Milner has adapted well to life at left-back, and with Loris Karius finally fit and replacing Simon Mignolet in goal, the German will be hoping that the first clean sheet of the season will come sooner rather than later, starting with Swansea City next weekend.
