Three things we learnt from Liverpool’s comeback at Swansea City

Daniel Sturridge has to do more to earn a starting place

With Roberto Firmino, Phillipe Coutinho and Sadio Mane impressing so much in the opening weeks, it has been a frustrating start to the campaign for Daniel Sturridge. When Adam Lallana was forced off with a groin injury in the 23rd minute, Sturridge must have been raring to go.

However, with just one shot, off target, in the whole game, and embarrassingly booked for simulation in the first half, Sturridge only went to show why he has been left stranded on the bench as the three main men in Liverpool’s attack excelled and sparked a comeback.

With a pass completion ratio of 68%, not completing a single pass inside the penalty area, it was a torrid afternoon for the England international. No successful crosses from three attempts and twice dispossessed when attempting to dribble, Sturridge did not penetrate the Swans’ defence as Klopp had hoped, and with no defensive contribution, he didn’t show himself to be the kind of all round team player that Klopp wants in his team.
