Three things we learnt from Liverpool’s 2-1 victory at Chelsea

Chelsea aren’t quite there yet

For Antonio Conte, this was his first real test in the Premier League after fairly winnable ties against West Ham, Watford, Burnley and Swansea. The Italian has made it clear that he still isn’t convinced by his backline, and it was some poor defending that gave way to Liverpool’s opener, whilst Gary Cahill’s clearance straight into the path of Jordan Henderson could have been better.

In midfield, the performance was almost like something taken straight out of last season. The likes of Nemanja Matic, Oscar and Eden Hazard all failed to impress, contributing little and producing even less. There can also be criticism for Conte, who bizarrely opted to retain N’Golo Kante despite dominating possession late on and pushing for a goal in the dying moments.

Diego Costa’s goal maintained his impressive run of form which has made him the Premier League’s top goalscorer and was the only scant consolation for the Italian and his back room team. If Chelsea are to push for the title, they’ll have to be better than they were on Friday night.
