Liverpool, and Jordan Henderson, have got what it takes
Few men in the Liverpool ranks have come in for more criticism in recent weeks than Jordan Henderson. With his captain credentials questioned time and time again over the past year or so, tonight he showed all of the qualities that saw him named captain by Brendan Rodgers and retained in that role by Jurgen Klopp.
Henderson’s winning strike was testament to all of his hard work on the training ground over the years, whilst he dominated the midfield battle and prevented Chelsea from getting back on the front foot. On a similar note, the previously much maligned Dejan Lovren was superb in defence and opened the scoring.
For Liverpool, the performance was also a promising one. Unbeaten in three games against Tottenham, Leicester and Chelsea, if only the Reds had beaten lowly Burnley, they may be fighting for position at the top of the table. The Anfield side have shown under Klopp that they have the grit and determination to hold out for results which has been lacking in recent years, even in the ever so close 2013/14 season.
Now, the challenge for Klopp and his men will be to keep some consistency. With Hull and Manchester United the only two fixtures against teams currently in the top half until mid-December, the side will have to prove that they are capable of living up to the favourites tag and beating off some lower quality opposition who are far more likely to sit back and play for a point. If the Reds can show there credentials against this kind of team, there could be no limit to their hopes for this season.
