Heading into this tie at Anfield yet to be beaten by any side in the top half, Liverpool fans had reasons to be fearful of losing that record as they continued to seek their first win of 2017 in the Premier League. The two sides both started the game well, but Sadio Mane proved the difference as he opened the scoring.
Mane raced through to power past Hugo Lloris in goal with a powerful finish before being in the right place at the right time to capitalise when the ball fell to him six yards out only two minutes later. That put the tie firmly in Liverpool’s favour but they had a real battle on their hands to make sure that the three points were theirs to keep.
Tottenham threw everything at Liverpool in the second half, with the Reds’ defence having let them down only too often in recent weeks against Hull and Swansea in particular, but Spurs couldn’t capitalise. Improvements by the Liverpool backline and a lack of clinical finishing from Pochettino’s men meant that they could see the game out.
