Liverpool’s meeting with Tottenham Hotspur was huge in terms of both the title race and the top four battle, and The Reds managed to come out on top, with thanks to Sadio Mane for his first-half double. Liverpool, having not recorded a league victory in 2017, looked back to their best at Anfield and got the result to show for it.
Here are three things that were learnt during the Merseyside outfit’s 2-0 victory against Spurs:
Sadio Mane is crucial for Liverpool
The sight of Sadio Mané bursting beyond the opposition defence with a clever run, before latching onto Georginio Wijnaldum’s reverse pass, would have brought much relieve and joy to Liverpool fans; many of whom believe that he is the key element in the club’s attack, and what they were missing as he attended the African Cup of Nations with Senegal. In his absence, Liverpool had gone five games without a win in the Premier League.
Of course, goals change games whenever they are scored, but Mané’s fine finish came at a time of considerable Liverpool pressure, and they were able to capitalise upon that. It lifted not only the players, but Anfield also, and with the crowd roaring behind the team it was Liverpool who scored again less than three minutes later, effectively killing the game.
