Three things we learnt from Leicester’s first win of the season over Swansea

Barrow bright-spark but Swans too little too late

Swansea City youngster Modou Barrow produced a man of the match worthy performance for the visitors, despite eventually ending up on the losing side. The winger managed seven crosses in the game having got up and down the flank throughout the contest, one of which led to Leroy Fer’s header ten minutes from time. Though even Barrow’s impressive performance couldn’t lift a Swansea attack that may as well not have turned up in the first half an hour of the contest, Leicester relentlessly closing them down in possession and boxing them into their own half.

Two long-range Gylfi Sigurdsson efforts were the only chances Swansea had an goal before they finally sparked into life late on, Barrow rewarded for his tireless display when his cross was exquisitely headed home by Leroy Fer, who beat substitute goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler after Kasper Schmeichel was withdrawn with a slight injury.

After Fer’s finish, Barrow very nearly laid on an equaliser for his team, but his cross was superbly cleared by the alert Danny Simpson with Fernando Llorente lurking in the area behind him.

It was however too little too late for Francesco Guidolin’s men, and their room for improvement will be to come out of the blocks quicker in order to avoid being effectively out of the contest by the time they click into the game as it was the case on Saturday. Their opening day win at Burnley already feels like a long time ago, and Guidolin will need to get his new-look frontline firing consistently- particularly new signing Fernando Llorente- with Leroy Fer netting their only two Premier League goals from midfield so far this campaign, or it may turn out to be a very long season indeed at the Liberty Stadium.
